News Item - 19 October 2010

bullet  2010/11 Season

The new season is almost upon us and there are a number of changes for the Summer League's seventh season.

Firstly, Jamie Milne has stepped up to take charge, filling the vacant spot left by Peter Lye's retirement from role of League Commissioner.

Peter has successfully guided the competition from that of a mere eye-twinkling to what is surely Wellington's premier local football tournament of the summer. In six seasons, the league has grown to the point where we are now considering expansion in future years just to keep up with the demand for teams who want in. Summer League has, over the course of the first six years, featured several players with experience from at least two NZFC teams and the 2010/11 Team Wellington squad contains two ex-Summer League players. We have even had an All White play in our competition. Peter retires from active duty with our highest commendations and best wishes and we certainly hope to see him down at Rongotai College during the course of the season.

Peter is not the only retiree. While there are other changes in the backroom, not all of which are finalised, this season sees the zimmer frames of The Originals being hung-up too. The Os may return to league duty in future seasons, when the hip replacement operations have settled down, but for now the co-founding team are giving up their spot. Their spot will be taken by new team, Shortjawed Kokopu Collective. With a mouthful like that, we're confident their support will soon morph into the Slackjawed Yokels! They are reportedly a youth-based team with a few twenty-somethings and the possibility of a forty-something or two.

The 2010/11 competition format will retain that introduced for 2009/10. The eight teams will be divided into two divisions, with divisional rivals meeting twice and cross-divisional teams meeting once in the regular season.

The referees will be back, with the full pool of officials to be confirmed. And they have a new weapon! The Green Card, which may be a cardless hand signal in practice, means your player is sent off for the remainder of the quarter but can be replaced by another player. This is for people who deliberately get sneaky e.g. blatant slide tackles or dissent to the referee. We're here to enjoy ourselves, most of us know each other already and have been playing the game together for years, so remember to have fun and, as the new Commissioner puts it, chill pill!

Week One Previews - 28 October 2010

bullet  Week One Preview Snippets
bullet  Barca Bay v Shortjawed Kokopu Collective
The reigning Champions take on the new boys. It's the Shortjaws first Summer League match and only two teams in league history have won their debut appearance. However, Barca have not won in four matches, having needed penalties last time out.
bullet  Rongotai v Red Rockers
The Rockers have won both the previous meetings between these two. While Rongotai have lost seven of their last eight, the Rocks undefeated in their last six matches.
bullet  Black Magic v AndyCapped
Summer League's only survivors from season one meet for the 14th time. The Caps have only defeated the Magic once, back November 2006, and the two teams haven't produced a draw together since November 2005.
bullet  Bay Athletic v South Coast Kinas
The Kinas have failed to beat Athletic in each of their five meetings. However, the Ks are on an unbeaten three game streak for only the second time in their history.

Week One Results Round-up - 30 October 2010

bullet  Week One Round-Ups
bullet  Barca Bay v Shortjawed Kokopu Collective
Due to Federation activities, both of these teams were struggling to put out a full team and the match was postponed
bullet  Rongotai 1 Red Rockers 1
In what became the opening match of the 2010/11 season, Rongotai and Red Rockers fought out a tight 1-1 draw. The Rockers were the better team early on, leading to Ashley Hawkes opening the season's goal accounts. Casey Ferrier equalised and Rongotai came back strongly, subjecting the Rocks to heavy pressure.
bullet  Black Magic 0 AndyCapped 1
League veterans Black Magic and AndyCapped contested an entertaining match with chances at both ends requiring both keepers to be busy. The match could have gone either way and a draw would have been a fair result. Ultimately, a fourth quarter strike from Anthony Baker gave the Caps a 1-0 win.
bullet

Bay Athletic 1 South Coast Kinas 5
South Coast Kinas inflicted a heavy defeat on Bay Athletic. Athletic took an early lead via a Carl Ede thunderbolt. Kinas came back with a vengeance finishing the first quarter 3-1 up, before winning 5-1 overall with goals from James Bennett, Ronald Prasad, Izaac O'Hara, Fred Double and Henock Mehari.

Week Two Previews - 4 November 2010

bullet

 Week Two Preview Snippets

bullet  Barca Bay v Rongotai
Honours are even from the four previous meetings between these teams, with two wins each. The trouble for Barca is they have scored precisely one goal in each game, so history suggests they will need a clean sheet to take the win.
bullet  Red Rockers v Shortjawed Kokopu Collective
It's the Shortjaws first Summer League match and only two teams in league history won their debut appearance. The Rocks are undefeated in seven, but their last three have been draws.
bullet

 Black Magic v Bay Athletic
The Magic start the game as favourites, having not lost two games in a row since 2006 and they've have never lost a match to Athletic. The last two meetings between these teams ended in draws.

bullet  South Coast Kinas v AndyCapped
Against the Kinas, the Caps average 3 goals a game and always win, so the pressure is on the youngsters. On the other hand, the Ks haven't lost since December 2009 and the Caps have only managed 1 goal in each of their last three matches.

Week Two Results Round-up - 6 November 2010

bullet  Week Two Round-Ups
bullet  Barca Bay 4 Rongotai 2
In their second ever meeting, Barca and Rongotai conspired to repeat their first result. Casey Ferrier kept Rongotai within comeback range, but goals Geordie Mansford, Izaac O'Haara, Janek Chmielewski and Birhanu Taye gave Barca the 4-2 win.
bullet  Red Rockers 7 Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 2
The Shortjaws opened their Summer League career by allowing Casey Ferrier to score a hat-trick and Matt Hicky to score four, as the Red Rockers beat the Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 7-2. Joe Brownlie and Paolo Cangiano scored for the Jaws, but from half time the gap stayed at two goals or more.
bullet

Black Magic 0 Bay Athletic 11
Ryan du Plessis and Bay Athletic set several league records in a comprehensive 11-0 thrashing of Black Magic. Ryan score five goals, Rodney Varga two, while Ian Paterson, Kevin Provis and Wes Dunne got in on the action. Everything went wrong for the Magic,  including an own goal for Paul Griffin, at an even rate of three goals per quarter until the fourth.

bullet

South Coast Kinas 3 AndyCapped 7
Jon Rowe kicked off the scoring then created one for David Batty, as AndyCapped comfortably beat the South Coast Kinas 7-3. Rowe finished with a brace, while Batty scored his first hat-trick before they let David Johnson grab a goal. James Bennett and Richard Steel gave the Kinas a sliver of hope, but the result was never in doubt. Fred Double scored a consolation for the Ks with the last kick of the match.
Stop Press: Reports from both Kinas and Caps have highlighted the score as 7-3, with David Batty scoring four and not three goals. Apologies.

Shield Quarter-Final Previews - 11 November 2010

bullet

 Coolmoves Shield Quarter-Final Preview Snippets

bullet  Bay Athletic v Red Rockers
We kick-off the Cup this weekend, starting with the 12:15pm game between Red Rockers and holders Bay Athletic. Honours are even in previous meetings, but these two were drawn together in the opening cup round last year too - resulting in a 3-2 win for Athletic. The Rocks have not lost in 8 games, but Athletic are fresh from setting several league records.
bullet  Barca Bay v Shortjawed Kokopu Collective
After failing to play their scheduled league meeting on the opening day of the season, Barca Bay and the Shortjaws have been drawn together for the 1:45pm kick-off in the cup this weekend. Since the Shield switched to a knock-out format, Barca have never made it past the first round..
bullet

South Coast Kinas v Black Magic
The 3:15pm Cup game is Black Magic up against the South Coast Kinas. In their previous meetings, whichever team scores first always wins. In fact, the Kinas win if they just score and the Magic have not scored in their last two matches.

bullet  AndyCapped Rongotai
The final Cup match of the weekend is the 4:45pm clash between AndyCapped and Rongotai. Both their previous meetings were high scoring games, with the Caps edging each one. Rongotai have only won one of their last 10 matches, while AndyCapped have only lost one of their last 12 - so the youngsters will need to upset the form book to get into the next round.

Shield Quarter-Final Results Round-up - 13 November 2010

bullet  Coolmoves Shield Quarter-Final Round-Ups
bullet  Bay Athletic 3 Red Rockers 4
The 2010/11 Shield competition started with holders Bay Athletic going down 4-3 to the Red Rockers. The Rocks marched into a 4-0 first quarter lead with two goals each from Ashley Hawkes and Casey Ferrier. Athletic stole one back through Kevin Provis, then Ryan Du Plessis. An own goal from Lorenzo Green made it 4-3 and the Rocks resorted to backs against the wall defending to cling on to the win.
bullet  Barca Bay 3 Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 3 [4-1 penalties]
In the second shield match, Johnny Gerondis put the Shortjaws one up. In a mad fourth quarter, Barca benefited from a John Carras own goal and swiftly followed that with goals from Cam Lidstone and Izaac O'Hara. 3-1 up with 5 minutes left, Barca appeared to have won. Joe Brownlie made it 3-2 before equalising with (more or less) the last kick of the game to take us to penalties. Barca won the shoot-out 4-1.
bullet

South Coast Kinas 3 Black Magic 1
The South Coast Kinas staged a third quarter blitz with goals from Michael Deane-Jackson, Ronald Prasad and Fred Double to ease past a troubled Black Magic team. On loan striker Janek Chmielewski took advantage of a goalkeeping blunder to score a late consolation. Magic keeper Jan Chmielewski went forward to try and find more goals, providing several long range shooting opportunities for the Kinas as they comfortably saw out the fourth quarter to win 3-1..

bullet  AndyCapped 4 Rongotai 5
Goals from David Batty, Jose Quijada and James Fairhall appeared to give AndyCapped the win at 3-1, with only Rongotai's Casey Ferrier having responded. Joseph Wesney and Van Elia scored for Rongotai within a minute of each other, only for David Batty to grab his second.
A late equaliser from Fionn Cahill-Fleury made it look like penalties, but with two minutes remaining, Paul Androutsos scored a winner for Rongotai to steal the game and complete a remarkable fourth quarter comeback.

Week Three Previews - 18 November 2010

bullet

 Week Three Preview Snippets

bullet  Barca Bay v Red Rockers
Coming up this weekend, we start with Barca Bay against Red Rockers at 12:15pm. Their one previous meeting was goalless. The Rocks are undefeated in 9 matches and should they avoid defeat again will equal the second longest unbeaten streak in Summer League history. Barca have drawn three of their last four games. If Izaac O'Hara scores, he will equal the Barca record for scoring in consecutive games.
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Rongotai
This weekend's second match is the first meeting of Rongotai and the Shortjaws. After a long run of defeats, Rongotai may have turned the corner, having only lost one of their previous four. Could they win two games in a row for the first time? The Jaws are still on the hunt for their first Summer League win, with Joe ...Brownlie shaping up as an important player to help put that right.
bullet

Black Magic v South Coast Kinas
In a repeat of the last week's Cup game, the 3:15pm kick-off is Black Magic against the South Coast Kinas. They've met five times before and if the Kinas score, they win. If the Magic fail to win, it will be the first time they've gone five games without a victory and the Kinas have only lost once in their last six.

bullet  AndyCapped  v Bay Athletic
The 4:15pm game sees AndyCapped take on Bay Athletic - a rivalry in which Athletic have one more win. The match pits the two golden boot leaders against each other. In what could be a high scoring game, will Ryan Du Plessis or David Batty score the most?

Week Three Results Round-up - 20 November 2010

bullet  Week Three Round-Ups
bullet  Barca Bay 6 Red Rockers 3
After falling 3-1 behind the Red Rockers, Barca Bay put together a strong finish to win 6-3. While Casey Ferrier continued his scoring for the Rocks, with Josh Notman adding one, Izaac O'Hara lead Barca to victory with a hat-trick. James Eadie, Janek Chmielewski and young Rory Cahill-Fleury also scored to end the Rocks impressive unbeaten streak.
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 0 Rongotai 2
Rongotai were just too strong for the Shortjaws, collecting a 2-0 win thanks to a first quarter goal from the prolific Casey Ferrier and a late strike from Abas Sheikh. The Jaws persistently threatened the Rongotai goal, but good defending and some fine interventions from keeper Ben Paterson combined to secure Rongotai's first ever clean sheet.
bullet  Black Magic 1 South Coast Kinas 3
In a repeat match-up of last week's cup game, the South Coast Kinas defeated Black Magic by the same scoreline. Richard Steel gave the Kinas a 1-0 lead before James Bennett made it two. Steve Davey gave the Magic something to chase when he got one back, but a last minute goal from Kevin Duindan made the match safe and the Kinas win 3-1.
bullet

 AndyCapped 4 Bay Athletic 2
Kevin Provis continued his scoring streak to give the injury-ravaged Bay Athletic a 2-0 lead against AndyCapped. Athletic were forced to field only half their usual players and it ultimately told as AndyCapped came back strongly to win 4-2. David Batty continued his challenge for the golden boot with a hat-trick, while Rupert Crump scored his first of the season.

Week Four Previews - 25 November 2010

bullet

 Week Four Preview Snippets

bullet  Barca Bay v AndyCapped
Barca Bay and AndyCapped will start this weekend's proceedings at 11:15am (note earlier time). The Caps have had the better of the rivalry, with 5 wins, but Barca are unbeaten this season. All eyes will be on David Batty and Izaac O'Hara, with both having scored in the last three games.
bullet  Red Rockers v Bay Athletic
In the 12:45pm game, Bay Athletic and Red Rockers play out a repeat of their recent Shield match. Athletic have injury concerns with 2 or 3 players out, whereas the Rocks lost their keeper and will likely look to loan in Xavier Scott. Both lost last week, but Athletic have only won once in their last five compared to the Rocks only losing one in ten.
bullet

 Rongotai v Black Magic
The third game this weekend is the 2:15pm clash between Black Magic and Rongotai. Their own previous meeting was a 5-3 victory for the Magic, but the vets have lost four straight games this season and haven't won in five. In contrast, Rongotai have just won two consecutive games for the first time ever.

bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective  v South Coast Kinas
The final game is the 3:45pm kick-off between the South Coast Kinas and the Shortjawed Kokopus. The Kinas have lost just the once in their last seven matches, whereas the Jaws are still seeking their first Summer League win.

Week Four Results Round-up - 20 November 2010

bullet  Week Four Round-Ups
bullet  Barca Bay 0 AndyCapped 3
Duncan Hodgson gave AndyCapped a first half lead in game that was tightly contested for the first 70 minutes. While the Caps looked reasonably comfortable, the game was not sewn up until two strikes in the final 10 minutes from Tim Delman and James Fairhall made it Barca Bay 0 AndyCapped 3.
bullet  Red Rockers 3 Bay Athletic 3
Bay Athletic looked to be cruising to a win over the Red Rockers. Hayden Polyanszky opened the scoring and added another after Rodney Varga had made it 3-1. Matt Hicky and Janek Chmielewski scored in the final 15 minutes, adding to Keiichi Nguyen's earlier goal, to complete an entertaining comeback to 3-3.
bullet

 Rongotai 3 Black Magic 5
The second meeting between Rongotai and Black Magic repeated their earlier score. Steve Davey scored twice and lead Magic to their first win of the season. Rongotai looked like mounting another comeback when Matt Keane and Michael Androutsos levelled it up, but Magic's Jody Bullen and Jim Hardaker made the game safe. Late goals from Van Elia and Jan Chmielewski made it 5-3 to Magic.

bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 8 South Coast Kinas 5
The Jaws and the Kinas produced an 8-5 goal-fest. Paolo Cangiano scored for the Jaws within seconds of kick-off, with Matt Kolic adding two, John Carras and Johnny Gerondis one each before half-time. The Kinas responded with goals from Richard Steel and a hat-trick from James Bennett, but the comeback was killed as off Gerondis completed his hat-trick and Joe Brownlie added another.

Week Five Previews - 2 December 2010

bullet

 Week Five Preview Snippets

bullet  Red Rockers v Rongotai
Our first game this weekend is between the Red Rockers and Rongotai at 12:15pm. They've met three times before and Rongotai are yet to beat the Rocks. The aggregate score from all previous meetings is 11-4 to the Rocks, so Rongotai will need to be strong defensively if they're to get a first win over the Reds.
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Barca Bay
In a rematch of the Cup Quarter-Finals, the Shortjaws will meet Barca at 1:45pm. Last time they finished 3-3 as the Jaws came back from 3-1 down with 5 minutes remaining. Since then, Barca have lost for the first time in six games while the Jaws have recorded their first ever win - it's too hard to predict a winner.
bullet

 AndyCapped v Black Magic
The 3:15pm match pits together the two surviving teams from Summer League's first season. It will be the 15th meeting between Black Magic and AndyCapped, an encounter Magic traditionally win though their last meeting saw the Caps win. The Caps have only twice scored more than one goal in a match against Magic, so will need a tight defence.

bullet  South Coast Kinas v Bay Athletic
The final match is the 4:45pm kick-off between the South Coast Kinas and Bay Athletic. Their last match-up saw the Kinas beat Athletic for the first time in six attempts. Clean sheets are rare when these two play, so expect plenty of goals.

bullet

 Week Six Preview Snippets

bullet  Barca Bay v Bay Athletic
The 12:15pm game is the battle of the Bays. Athletic have not beaten Barca for over three years. Barca have won every alternate game this season, so continuing that trend will see them win. Athletic won last week, but haven't won two on the trot since this time last year.
bullet  Rongotai  v South Coast Kinas
In the 1:45pm match, Rongotai will take on the Kinas for only the third time. It's currently honours even, but the Kinas have lost their last three. If Rongotai win, it will be the first time they've won three in a row.
bullet

 Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v AndyCapped
The Shortjaws will play their first ever match against AndyCapped at 3:15pm. The Caps have won their last three - a streak they've only bettered once. The Jaws won for the first time two weeks ago, but slumped badly last week.

bullet  Red Rockers v Black Magic
The final match of the day is the 4:45pm kick-off between Red Rockers and Black Magic. In their only previous meeting, the Rocks won 4-2. The Rocks have won once in four matches; the Magic have won once in seven. Both teams have leaked a lot of goals this season, so expect an end-to-end encounter that could end up with either team winning.

Week Six Results - 11 December 2010

bullet  Week Six Round-Ups
bullet  Barca Bay 1 Bay Athletic 3
Barca Bay took a first quarter lead through James Eadie into the half-time break. Bay Athletic equalised in the 46th minute with Kevin Provis' 8th goal of the season. Paul Muollo gave Athletic the lead in the fourth quarter before Dave Rutherford made the victory safe in the 77th minute. Barca 1 Athletic 3.
bullet  Rongotai 2 South Coast Kinas 4
Rongotai were a little fortunate to be 1-0 up on the Kinas at half-time, courtesy of Zubid Abdulsalam, but the Kinas responded with three goals in three minutes early in the third quarter from James Bennett, Fred Double and Henock Mehari. Then Josh Palmer added the Kinas' fourth. Matt Keane gave Rongotai some hope with a 61st minute goal, but it finished 4-2 to the Kinas.
bullet

Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 1 AndyCapped 7
AndyCapped dominated the Shortjaws with some ruthless finishing. Joe Murphy opened the scoring, followed by David Batty, Rupert Crump and David Johnson. A consolation goal for the Jaws from Dave Paterson did little to stop the Caps scoring spree, as David Johnson added another and Duncan Hodgson grabbed two late goals to complete a 7-1 rout.

bullet  Red Rockers 2 Black Magic 0
A tight game between Red Rockers and Black Magic saw the Rocks grab a first half lead through Matt Thomas. Magic subjected the Rocks to increasing pressure throughout the second half, but Dominic Scott added a fourth quarter goal for the Rocks to provide a two goal cushion that remained in place to the final whistle.

Week One Catch-up Results - 15 December 2010

bullet  Barca Bay 3 Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 3

Week Seven Results - 18 December 2010

bullet  Week Seven Round-Ups
bullet  Rongotai 6 Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 5
Goals galore between Rongotai and the Shortjaws. Michael Androutsos and Matt Keane gave Rongotai a 2-0 lead. Paolo Cangiano pulled one back for the Jaws, but Matt Keane made it 3-1 at the quarter. Van Elia added to the lead after half-time, but Jimmy Haidakis and Joe Brownlie immediately responded to bring it back to 4-3. Fionn Cahill-Fleury made it 5-3, but Paolo Cangiano struck again for the Jaws. Matt Keane completed his hat-trick, apparently killing off the Jaws comeback but Johnny Gerondis scored to make it 6-5 and a nervous Rongotai clung on to the end.
bullet  AndyCapped 1 South Coast Kinas 2
When Tim Delman gave AndyCapped a first half lead, it looked like the Kinas were once again heading for a loss to the Caps. Fred Double equalised in the third quarter and Tim Robinson scored a winner for the Kinas. It's the first time the Ks have ever beaten AndyCapped and it's the Caps first league defeat of the season.
bullet

Red Rockers 5 Barca Bay 5
Another goal-fest in the Red Rockers - Barca Bay clash. Jack Williams started off the scoring with a blinding own goal to give the Rocks an early lead. Fionn Cahill-Fleury equalised mid-way through the second half, but a slide tackle in the area gave the Rocks a penalty and Keiichi Nguyen converted easily. When Casey Ferrier and Ashley Hawkes extended the Rocks lead to 4-1, it seemed to be game over. Geordie Mansford and Joss Knol brought Barca back to within one, then a crazy three minutes saw three goals. Joss Knol equalised, Lorenzo Green restored the Rocks lead and Fionn Cahill-Fleury made it 5-5 - a score both teams ultimately had to accept.

bullet  Bay Athletic 1 Black Magic 3
Nick Goodall's own goal gave Black Magic the lead over Bay Athletic. Magic followed up with goals from Steve Davey and Peter Chung to take a 3-0 advantage into the half-time break. Kevin Provis scored a consolation for Athletic, but it finished Black Magic 3 Bay Athletic 1.

Week Eight Previews - 13 January 2011

bullet

 Week Eight Preview Snippets

bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Bay Athletic
We recommence this weekend. Saturday's first match is the first ever encounter between Bay Athletic and the Shortjaws. Both teams have averaged aggregate scores of at least eight goals a game, so expect the goalkeepers to look miserable.
bullet  Red Rockers v South Coast Kinas
Both teams are on a decent run, with the Kinas having won their last two and the Rocks undefeated in three. However, the Rocks have won both of their previous meetings so history is against the Ks.
bullet

 Barca Bay v Black Magic
Barca haven't beaten Black Magic since December 2007. Barca haven't beaten anyone in their last four games. The Magic have had a miserable season, averaging just 1.5 goals a game but did win last time out (for only their second win this season).

Week Eight Results - 15 January 2011

bullet  Week Eight Round-Ups
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 0 Bay Athletic 2
Despite both teams being involved in high scoring matches all season, this match was pretty low key. Athletic took a second quarter lead through league veteran Paul Muollo and never looked in danger of surrendering it, particularly after Joe Brownlie picked up a green card with no subs available to replace him. Kevin Provis struck late on to ensure maximum points for Athletic and a fruitless match for the Jaws.
bullet  Red Rockers South Coast Kinas 1
Cameron Hickey struck early for the Red Rockers in a game that provided plenty of goal chances. The Rocks were unable to build on this lead and playing in to the wind during the the second half, they gave the Kinas every reason to keep chasing. The Ks struck back with an equaliser from Kevin Duindan after an error from Xavier Scott. A Richard Steel header came close to stealing the win for the Kinas, but a draw was a fair result from an exciting match.
bullet

Barca Bay 5 Black Magic 0
A drab first half with little to offer the crowd, despite a Karl Solan error gifting a goal to James Eadie. Steve Davey deflected a harmless cross into his own net just after half time and Barca never looked back. Joss Knol ended the third quarter with another goal before
Saschka Nicoresti-Goode and Birhanu Taye scored in successive minutes to give Barca an easy end to a match they deserved to win, albeit via a flattering scoreline.

Week Nine Previews - 20 January 2011

bullet

 Week Nine Preview Snippets

bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Black Magic
The first game this week pitches the cellar dwellers of each division against each other. It's the first time the Shortjaws and Black Magic have met. Both teams need maximum points (and other results to go the right way) if they are to keep their Jessett Cup hopes alive. Given they can only make the top two in their division by goal difference, both teams need to score a lot of goals. A lot.
bullet  Rongotai  v Bay Athletic
Game two pits two semi-final hopefuls against each other: Rongotai v Bay Athletic. Both teams have won three of their last four, so this should be a good encounter for the neutrals to watch. This will be their third meeting and Athletic won both of their previous matches, so Rongotai will need to break history.
bullet

 AndyCapped v Red Rockers
The third match this weekend is between AndyCapped and Red Rockers. The Rocks have never beaten the Caps, but are undefeated in four. The Caps lost the last time out and only need three points from their final three league games to secure a major semi-final spot.

bullet  Barca Bay v South Coast Kinas
The final match sees Barca Bay take on the South Coast Kinas. They've met four times before and on every occasion, Barca have scored just once. Despite this, both teams have two wins each. Both teams are undefeated in their last three, so perhaps a draw is on the cards. Barca have virtually secured a major semi spot, whereas the Kinas are in a dog-fight with Bay Athletic.

Week Nine Results - 24 January 2011

bullet  Week Nine Round-Ups
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 2 Black Magic 7
Steve Davey lead the Black Magic line from the front, scoring four goals as the Magic finished off the Shortjaws 7-2. Mike Jessett, Jody Bullen and an OG completed the scoring for a team that has been struggling to hit the net all season. Late goals from Paolo Cangiano and Johnny Gerondis were scant consolation for the Jaws, who now know they will finish at the foot of their division. The Magic are also out of running for the Jessett Cup but have perhaps found form in time for the fight to avoid the wooden spoon.
bullet  Rongotai 4 Bay Athletic 6
Rongotai and Bay Athletic went head-to-head with their Jessett Cup semi places up for grabs. David Murphy (x2) and Ian Paterson gave Athletic a 3-0 lead before Van Elia and Michael Androutsos pulled it back to 3-2 at half-time. Carlo Petagna and Chris Christie then made it 5-2 in consecutive minutes to seal the points for Athletic. Michael Androutsos got his second and Hayden Polyanzsky responded to make it high scoring. Rongotai must wait to see if a Jessett Cup semi awaits, but Bay Athletic are now definitely in.
bullet

 Red Rockers 5 AndyCapped 6
AndyCapped and Red Rockers slugged out an extravaganza. The Caps went from 3-1 up to 5-3 down before winning 6-5. David Batty scored inside 15 seconds for the Caps on his way to a hat-trick, Duncan Hodgson grabbed two and David Johnsons also scored. For the Rocks, Casey Ferrier scored as usual, while teammates Vathana Young and Matt Hicky both scored a brace. The results ensures the Caps finish top of their division and has the Rocks nervously watching Rongotai for the last remaining Jessett Cup semi.

bullet Barca Bay 2 South Coast Kinas 0
Barca Bay beat the South Coast Kinas 2-0, with Fionn Cahill-Fleury scoring twice. Both goals were assisted with a little luck - the first coming from a keeping error when it appeared Fitt-Simpson had made a routine save, while the second benefited from a deflection. Barca are now guaranteed top spot in their division, while the Kinas can no longer make the Jessett Cup semis. Instead they will have to join the post-season struggle to avoid the wooden spoon.

bullet  Rongotai v AndyCapped
The re-arranged AndyCapped-Rongotai match takes place on Wednesday at 6.30pm. In the previous three meetings, there have been an average of 8 goals with the Caps always scoring 4 or 5. The Caps have only lost 1 in their last 6, while Rongotai have only won 1 in 3. However, it's a match that only matters to Rongotai with the Caps already secure and only looking to maintain form - so perhaps an upset is on the cards?

Week Eight Catch-up Result - 26 January 2011

bullet  Week Eight Catch-up Round-Up
bullet  Rongotai 8 AndyCapped 4
The 250th match in Summer League history produced quite the upset.  Rongotai strikers Van Elia and Michael Androutsos ran riot, scoring 4 goals and 3 goals respectively. Joseph Wesney chipped in as Rongotai scored a team record of 8 goals. The Caps scored through League veteran James Fairhall and debutants Graham Little (retired from Team Welly) and Matt Woods (2). The final score of 8-4 is the second highest scoring Summer League match of all-time.

Week Ten Previews - 27 January 2011

 Week Ten Preview Snippets

bullet  Rongotai v Barca Bay
Barca Bay go into their final match knowing they can relax. Undefeated in their last four, they have already clinched top spot in their division. Rongotai have been up and down throughout the season, but always seem to pull out a required result to stay alive - with a Shield Final left to play. Win by two goals and Rongotai will have a major semi-final berth regardless of other results.
bullet  South Coast Kinas v Black Magic
The South Coast Kinas and Black Magic go head-to-head knowing they're both out of contention for the Jessett Cup, but they'll want to give themselves the best possible chance of avoiding the Wooden Spoon. It will help if they can finish off the bottom of their division to claim an easier (in theory, anyway) Minor Semi. Results elsewhere are irrelevant - Magic have to win by at least two goals to overtake Kinas in the table.
bullet

Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Red Rockers
The Shortjaws can kind of relax in their final match, against Red Rockers. The Jaws cannot climb off the bottom of the table, so it's a warm-up for their campaign to avoid the dreaded Spoon. For the Rockers, this is a big game. The Rocks have to win. A draw would only be enough if Rongotai lose by five, a one goal win is enough if Rongotai lose, while a two goal win would allow the Rocks to make it if Rongotai draw. The problem is, the Rocks could be out before they get to play.

bullet  Bay Athletic v AndyCapped
The Bay Athletic v AndyCapped match is little more than a chance for Kevin Provis and Dave Batty to continue the golden boot race in a head-to-head fashion. The Caps are clear at the top of their division, awaiting the winner of the Rongotai and Red Rockers scenario. Bay Athletic cannot finish anywhere other than second in the division and already know they're facing Barca Bay in Major Semi.

Week Ten Results - 29 January 2011

bullet  Week Nine Round-Ups
bullet  Rongotai 3 Barca Bay 4
Nerves appeared to get the better of Rongotai in a topsy-turvy game with Barca. Joseph Wesney gave Rongotai an early lead before a Jack Williams thunderbolt levelled the match a few minutes later. Fionn Cahill-Fleury restored Rongotai's lead in the second quarter, but once again only a few minutes passed before the equaliser from Janek Chmielewski. In the final quarter, Rory Cahill-Fleury put Barca ahead for two minutes. Casey Ferrier equalised, but Janek Chmielewski made it 4-3 to Barca four minutes from time.
bullet  South Coast Kinas 1 Black Magic 3
Just six minutes into their match, Michael Deane-Jackson gave Kinas the lead over Black Magic. To climb off the bottom of their division - a place they'd been in since week two - the Magic needed three goals. Just before half-time, Steve Davey got the first. Two minutes into the second half, Steve Davey got the second. Late in the third quarter, Steve Davey completed his hat-trick.
bullet  Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 1 Red Rockers 1
Although a win would put them in the semis, it was a strangely lacklustre half from the Red Rockers. The Shortjaws were buoyed with five loan players and looked good for the recruitments, with Joe Brownlie giving them a first half lead. The second half was end-to-end attacking football. Dutch Ricky equalised for the Rocks and they set about securing the all important winner.... that just wouldn't come - much to Rongotai's relief.
bullet  Bay Athletic 2 AndyCapped 5
In a dead rubber of a match, Bay Athletic needed a bunch of loan signings for their meeting with AndyCapped. Josh Notman gave the Caps the lead before golden boot nominee Dave Batty equalised. Duncan Hodgson and Yorick Canales traded goals to keep things level with 10 minutes remaining. Three quick goals from Dave Batty, Craig Bland and David Johnson ensured the Caps go into the semis in good spirits.

 Coolmoves Shield Final Preview Snippet

bullet

 Rongotai v Red Rockers
The 2010/11 Shield will go to a new recipient and give whoever wins their first taste of Summer League glory. It's the 5th time the Rocks and Rongotai have met. The Rocks won the first two, but since then there has been a draw and a convincing Rongotai win. The Rocks are in a little bit of a slump, having gone winless in their last four matches. Rongotai lost last time out but haven't lost two in a row since last season. Accordingly, Rongotai are slight favourites for the match but it really could go either way.

 Final Preview Snippets

bullet  Black Magic v South Coast Kinas
In the 5th place play-off, Black Magic and the Kinas will meet for the 4th time this season. The other three games ended 3-1, just once to Magic. The Kinas have only won once in the last four. The Magic have won their last two and would like to give Steve Davey a chance to chase the golden boot. This could be the difference in what is usually a low key game on Finals day.
bullet  Rongotai  v Bay Athletic
The 3rd place play-off pairs up Rongotai and Bay Athletic for the 4th time in history. Bay Athletic have won every previous meeting, never failing to score less than 3 goals. Rongotai haven't won in three, Bay Athletic in two. Third place is another game that is usually low key, but there are three players still in contention for th Golden Boot - Van Elia & Michael Androutsos for Rongotai, Kevin Provis for Bay Athletic.
bullet

Shortjawed Kokopu Collective v Red Rockers
The Wooden Spoon playoff pits the Shield winning Rockers against the expansion Shortjaws. In their previous two meetings, the Rocks won once and the other was a draw. The Jaws haven't won in seven games. They drew last week but have yet to manage two consecutive games without defeat. Conversely, the Rocks - who lost heavily last week - have never lost two in a row. The Rockers Casey Ferrier remains in contention for the Golden Boot too.

bullet  AndyCapped v Barca Bay
The Jessett Cup Final will be played between Barca and AndyCapped. Barca are the reigning champs playing in their second Final. This is the Caps third final - after losing the first two, will it be third time lucky? It will be the 10th time the teams have met. The Caps are 6-3 up and won the last two, but Barca won their one and only playoff meeting.

Play-off Semi-Final Results - 6 February 2011

bullet  Playoff Semi Final Round-Ups
bullet  Black Magic beat Shortjawed Kokopu Collective by default
bullet  AndyCapped 3 Rongotai 3 (4-2 penalties)
The Caps and Rongotai fought out an exciting match to decide the first Jessett Cup finalist. Casey Ferrier gave Rongotai the  lead after an even first quarter provoking a response from the Caps front line. John O'Driscoll scored twice, including a cross-come-shot that eluded everyone on its way to the top corner. Michael Androutsos and Casey Ferrier levelled the score in the second half. The Caps had the most possession, but Rongotai carved out the chances and the Cap keeper Neil McInnes had to make several great saves. AndyCapped progress after being perfect in the penalty shoot-out, punishing Casey Ferrier and Jake Berquist.
bullet  South Coast Kinas 7 Red Rockers 1
The Kinas beat Red Rockers for the first time, inflicting a good old fashioned whooping in the process as Kevin Duindan scored five goals. The Rocks displayed some sloppy defending, looking hungover from the previous night's Sevens festivities as they lost, somewhat appropriately, 7-1. Casey Ferrier saved the Rocks from being completely shut-out, while Alex Thornton and Michael Deane-Jackson made sure it wasn't all about Kevin for the Kinas.
bullet  Barca Bay 4 Bay Athletic 1
Barca Bay and Bay Athletic contested the second major semi to decide who would meet the Caps. The first half was very tight and either side could have taken a lead into the break. Fred Double grabbed Barca the lead, finishing off a good move. Then four goals over 8 minutes of the final quarter decided the match. James Eadie scored two for Barca. A Dave Rutherford header from a corner gave Athletic a glimmer of hope, but one minute later Saschka Nicoresti-Goode finished a breakaway attack to the put the game beyond doubt at 4-1.

 Inside the Numbers:
bullet

We played 54 games this season, 7 more than the previous maximum.

bullet

Of the 54 games, only 10 ended in draws. Half of those were knockout games, requiring penalty shoot-outs.

bullet

172 different players played games, of whom 63 were completely new to Summer League.

bullet

Bay Athletic used more players than anyone has ever previously needed to get through the season.

bullet

34 different players made loan appearances - a new record.

bullet Some players proved to be popular loan targets and as a result, 7 of the top 10 most appearances in a single season are from this season. Xavier Scott and Fionn-Cahill-Fleury were most active with 26 games each.
bullet

Average goals per game were at a record high, with 3.10 per team each game despite Black Magic making an entry in the most failures to score standings..

bullet

Four teams this season scored more goals per game than any other team had managed in previous seasons, with AndyCapped taking top spot.

bullet

Someone had to bear the brunt of that and, while no-one escaped lightly, the Shortjaws set a new record for goals against per game.

bullet

We set new records for highest scoring game with six highest scoring matches in Summer League and one of those was the biggest ever win and most goals scored by one team..

bullet

Casey Ferrier scored a record 24 goals, dividing his tally across two teams and managed an unprecedented two spots in the top 10 places of most goals in a season for a team.

bullet

Across all games, we had just 8 clean sheets - the lowest since 2004/05.

bullet

For the first time since 2006/07, we didn't produce any goalless matches.

bullet

Paul Muollo became the first Summer League player to reach 80 caps, pushing injured keeper Michael Wray down to second place in the stats.

bullet

Mike Jessett became the first Summer League player to reach (and surpass) 70 caps for one team.

bullet

Nine players were ever presents for their teams: Jack Williams, Xavier Scott (Barca Bay), Fred Double, Richard Steel, Tim Robinson (South Coast Kinas), Jim Hardaker, Kristian Miles, Steve Davey (Black Magic), Joe Brownlie (Shortjawed Kokopu Collective).

bullet

Excluding own goals, 87 different players scored.

bullet

Not an official stat, but Casey Ferrier's favourite colour was green as he picked up more green cards than anyone!
