2010/11
Season |
|
The new season is almost upon
us and there are a number of changes for the Summer League's seventh
season.
Firstly, Jamie Milne has
stepped up to take charge, filling the vacant spot left by Peter Lye's
retirement from role of League Commissioner.
Peter has successfully
guided the competition from that of a mere eye-twinkling to what is surely
Wellington's premier local football tournament of the summer. In six
seasons, the league has grown to the point where we are now considering
expansion in future years just to keep up with the demand for teams who
want in. Summer League has, over the course of the first six years, featured several players
with experience from at least two NZFC teams and the 2010/11 Team
Wellington squad contains two ex-Summer League players. We have even had
an All White play in our competition. Peter retires from active duty
with our highest commendations and best wishes and we certainly hope to
see him down at Rongotai College during the course of the season.
Peter is not the only
retiree. While there are other changes in the backroom, not all of
which are finalised, this season sees the zimmer frames of The Originals
being hung-up too. The Os may return to league duty in future seasons,
when the hip replacement operations have settled down, but for now the
co-founding team are giving up their spot. Their spot will be taken by
new team, Shortjawed Kokopu Collective. With a mouthful like that, we're
confident their support will soon morph into the Slackjawed Yokels! They
are reportedly a youth-based team with a few twenty-somethings and the
possibility of a forty-something or two.
The 2010/11 competition
format will retain that introduced for 2009/10. The eight teams will be
divided into two divisions, with divisional rivals meeting twice and
cross-divisional teams meeting once in the regular season.
The referees will be back,
with the full pool of officials to be confirmed. And they have a new
weapon! The Green Card, which may be a cardless hand signal in
practice, means your player is sent off for the remainder of the quarter
but can be replaced by another player. This is for people who
deliberately get sneaky e.g. blatant slide tackles or dissent to the
referee. We're here to enjoy ourselves, most of us know each other
already and have been playing the game together for years, so remember
to have fun and, as the new Commissioner puts it, chill pill!

Barca Bay
v
Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective
The reigning Champions take on the new boys. It's the Shortjaws first
Summer League match and only two teams in league history have won their
debut appearance. However, Barca have not won in four matches, having
needed penalties last time out. |
|
 |
Rongotai
v
Red Rockers
The Rockers have won both the previous meetings
between these two. While Rongotai have lost seven of their last eight,
the Rocks undefeated in their last six matches.
|
|
 |
Black Magic
v
AndyCapped
Summer League's only
survivors from season one meet for the 14th time. The Caps have only
defeated the Magic once, back November 2006, and the two teams haven't
produced a draw together since November 2005.
|
|
 |
Bay Athletic
v
South Coast Kinas
The Kinas have failed to beat Athletic in each of
their five meetings. However, the Ks are on an unbeaten three game
streak for only the second time in their history. |

In their second ever meeting, Barca and Rongotai conspired to repeat
their first result. Casey Ferrier kept Rongotai within comeback range,
but goals Geordie Mansford, Izaac O'Haara, Janek Chmielewski and Birhanu
Taye gave Barca the 4-2 win. |
|
 |
Red Rockers

Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective 2
The Shortjaws opened their Summer League career by
allowing Casey Ferrier to score a hat-trick and Matt Hicky to score
four, as the Red Rockers beat the Shortjawed Kokopu Collective 7-2. Joe
Brownlie and Paolo Cangiano scored for the Jaws, but from half time the
gap stayed at two goals or more. |

Black Magic

Ryan du Plessis and Bay
Athletic set several league records in a comprehensive 11-0 thrashing of
Black Magic. Ryan score five goals, Rodney Varga two, while Ian
Paterson, Kevin Provis and Wes Dunne got in on the action. Everything
went wrong for the Magic, including an own goal for Paul Griffin,
at an even rate of three goals per quarter until the fourth. |
|
 |
South Coast Kinas
3
AndyCapped 7
Jon Rowe kicked off the scoring then created one for
David Batty, as AndyCapped comfortably beat the South Coast Kinas 7-3.
Rowe finished with a brace, while Batty scored his first hat-trick
before they let David Johnson grab a goal. James Bennett and Richard
Steel gave the Kinas a sliver of hope, but the result was never in
doubt. Fred Double scored a consolation for the Ks with the last kick of
the match.
Stop Press: Reports from both Kinas and Caps have highlighted the score
as 7-3, with David Batty scoring four and not three goals. Apologies. |

The 2010/11 Shield competition started with holders Bay Athletic going
down 4-3 to the Red Rockers. The Rocks marched into a 4-0 first quarter
lead with two goals each from Ashley Hawkes and Casey Ferrier. Athletic
stole one back through Kevin Provis, then Ryan Du Plessis. An own goal
from Lorenzo Green made it 4-3 and the Rocks resorted to backs against
the wall defending to cling on to the win. |
|
 |
Barca Bay
3
Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective 3 [4-1 penalties]
In the second shield match, Johnny Gerondis put the
Shortjaws one up. In a mad fourth quarter, Barca benefited from a John
Carras own goal and swiftly followed that with goals from Cam Lidstone
and Izaac O'Hara. 3-1 up with 5 minutes left, Barca appeared to have
won. Joe Brownlie made it 3-2 before equalising with (more or less) the
last kick of the game to take us to penalties. Barca won the shoot-out
4-1. |
|
 |
South Coast Kinas
3 Black Magic 1
The South Coast Kinas
staged a third quarter blitz with goals from Michael Deane-Jackson,
Ronald Prasad and Fred Double to ease past a troubled Black Magic team.
On loan striker Janek Chmielewski took advantage of a goalkeeping
blunder to score a late consolation. Magic keeper Jan Chmielewski went
forward to try and find more goals, providing several long range
shooting opportunities for the Kinas as they comfortably saw out the
fourth quarter to win 3-1.. |
|
 |
AndyCapped
4 Rongotai
5
Goals from David Batty, Jose Quijada and James Fairhall
appeared to give AndyCapped the win at 3-1, with only Rongotai's Casey
Ferrier having responded. Joseph Wesney and Van Elia scored for Rongotai
within a minute of each other, only for David Batty to grab his second.
A late equaliser from Fionn
Cahill-Fleury made it look like penalties, but with two minutes
remaining, Paul Androutsos scored a winner for Rongotai to steal the
game and complete a remarkable fourth quarter comeback. |

Goals galore between Rongotai and the Shortjaws. Michael Androutsos and
Matt Keane gave Rongotai a 2-0 lead. Paolo Cangiano pulled one back for
the Jaws, but Matt Keane made it 3-1 at the quarter. Van Elia added to
the lead after half-time, but Jimmy Haidakis and Joe Brownlie
immediately responded to bring it back to 4-3. Fionn Cahill-Fleury made
it 5-3, but Paolo Cangiano struck again for the Jaws. Matt Keane
completed his hat-trick, apparently killing off the Jaws comeback but
Johnny Gerondis scored to make it 6-5 and a nervous Rongotai clung on to
the end. |
|
 |
AndyCapped
1 South Coast Kinas
2
When Tim Delman gave AndyCapped a first half lead, it
looked like the Kinas were once again heading for a loss to the Caps.
Fred Double equalised in the third quarter and Tim Robinson scored a
winner for the Kinas. It's the first time the Ks have ever beaten
AndyCapped and it's the Caps first league defeat of the season. |
|
 |
Red Rockers

Another goal-fest in the
Red Rockers - Barca Bay clash. Jack Williams started off the scoring
with a blinding own goal to give the Rocks an early lead. Fionn
Cahill-Fleury equalised mid-way through the second half, but a slide
tackle in the area gave the Rocks a penalty and Keiichi Nguyen converted
easily. When Casey Ferrier and Ashley Hawkes extended the Rocks lead to
4-1, it seemed to be game over. Geordie Mansford and Joss Knol brought
Barca back to within one, then a crazy three minutes saw three goals.
Joss Knol equalised, Lorenzo Green restored the Rocks lead and Fionn
Cahill-Fleury made it 5-5 - a score both teams ultimately had to accept. |

Bay Athletic
1 Black Magic

Nick Goodall's own goal gave Black Magic the lead over
Bay Athletic. Magic followed up with goals from Steve Davey and Peter
Chung to take a 3-0 advantage into the half-time break. Kevin Provis
scored a consolation for Athletic, but it finished Black Magic 3 Bay
Athletic 1. |

Steve Davey lead the Black Magic line from the front, scoring four goals
as the Magic finished off the Shortjaws 7-2. Mike Jessett, Jody Bullen
and an OG completed the scoring for a team that has been struggling to
hit the net all season. Late goals from Paolo Cangiano and Johnny
Gerondis were scant consolation for the Jaws, who now know they will
finish at the foot of their division. The Magic are also out of running
for the Jessett Cup but have perhaps found form in time for the fight to
avoid the wooden spoon. |
|
 |
Rongotai
4 Bay Athletic
6
Rongotai and Bay Athletic went head-to-head with their
Jessett Cup semi places up for grabs. David Murphy (x2) and Ian Paterson
gave Athletic a 3-0 lead before Van Elia and Michael Androutsos pulled
it back to 3-2 at half-time. Carlo Petagna and Chris Christie then made
it 5-2 in consecutive minutes to seal the points for Athletic. Michael
Androutsos got his second and Hayden Polyanzsky responded to make it
high scoring. Rongotai must wait to see if a Jessett Cup semi awaits,
but Bay Athletic are now definitely in. |
|
 |
Red Rockers
5 AndyCapped
6
AndyCapped and Red Rockers slugged out an extravaganza. The Caps went
from 3-1 up to 5-3 down before winning 6-5. David Batty scored inside 15
seconds for the Caps on his way to a hat-trick, Duncan Hodgson grabbed
two and David Johnsons also scored. For the Rocks, Casey Ferrier scored
as usual, while teammates Vathana Young and Matt Hicky both scored a
brace. The results ensures the Caps finish top of their division and has
the Rocks nervously watching Rongotai for the last remaining Jessett Cup
semi. |
|
 |
Barca Bay
2 South Coast Kinas
0
Barca Bay beat the South Coast Kinas 2-0, with Fionn
Cahill-Fleury scoring twice. Both goals were assisted with a little luck
- the first coming from a keeping error when it appeared Fitt-Simpson
had made a routine save, while the second benefited from a deflection.
Barca are now guaranteed top spot in their division, while the Kinas can
no longer make the Jessett Cup semis. Instead they will have to join the
post-season struggle to avoid the wooden spoon. |

v
AndyCapped
The re-arranged AndyCapped-Rongotai match takes place on Wednesday at
6.30pm. In the previous three meetings, there have been an average of 8
goals with the Caps always scoring 4 or 5. The Caps have only lost 1 in
their last 6, while Rongotai have only won 1 in 3. However, it's a match
that only matters to Rongotai with the Caps already secure and only
looking to maintain form - so perhaps an upset is on the cards? |

The 250th match in Summer League history produced quite the upset.
Rongotai strikers Van Elia and Michael Androutsos ran riot, scoring 4
goals and 3 goals respectively. Joseph Wesney chipped in as Rongotai
scored a team record of 8 goals. The Caps scored through League veteran
James Fairhall and debutants Graham Little (retired from Team Welly) and
Matt Woods (2). The final score of 8-4 is the second highest scoring
Summer League match of all-time. |

Rongotai
v
Barca Bay
Barca Bay go into their final match knowing they can relax. Undefeated
in their last four, they have already clinched top spot in their
division. Rongotai have been up and down throughout the season, but
always seem to pull out a required result to stay alive - with a Shield
Final left to play. Win by two goals and Rongotai will have a major
semi-final berth regardless of other results. |
|
 |
South Coast Kinas
v
Black Magic
The South Coast Kinas and Black Magic go head-to-head knowing they're
both out of contention for the Jessett Cup, but they'll want to give
themselves the best possible chance of avoiding the Wooden Spoon. It
will help if they can finish off the bottom of their division to claim
an easier (in theory, anyway) Minor Semi. Results elsewhere are
irrelevant - Magic have to win by at least two goals to overtake Kinas in the table. |
|
 |
Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective
v
Red Rockers
The Shortjaws can kind of relax in their final match, against Red
Rockers. The Jaws cannot climb off the bottom of the table, so it's a
warm-up for their campaign to avoid the dreaded Spoon. For the Rockers, this
is a big game. The Rocks have to win. A draw would only be enough if
Rongotai lose by five, a one goal win is enough if Rongotai lose, while a
two goal win would allow the Rocks to make it if Rongotai draw. The problem
is, the Rocks could be out before they get to play. |
|
 |
Bay Athletic v
AndyCapped
The Bay Athletic v AndyCapped match is little more than a chance for
Kevin Provis and Dave Batty to continue the golden boot race in a
head-to-head fashion. The Caps are clear at the top of their division,
awaiting the winner of the Rongotai and Red Rockers scenario. Bay
Athletic cannot finish anywhere other than second in the division and
already know they're facing Barca Bay in Major Semi.

Nerves appeared to get the better of Rongotai in a topsy-turvy game with
Barca. Joseph Wesney gave Rongotai an early lead before a Jack Williams
thunderbolt levelled the match a few minutes later. Fionn Cahill-Fleury
restored Rongotai's lead in the second quarter, but once again only a
few minutes passed before the equaliser from Janek Chmielewski. In the
final quarter, Rory Cahill-Fleury put Barca ahead for two minutes. Casey
Ferrier equalised, but Janek Chmielewski made it 4-3 to Barca four
minutes from time. |
|
 |
South Coast Kinas
1 Black Magic
3
Just six minutes into their match, Michael Deane-Jackson
gave Kinas the lead over Black Magic. To climb off the bottom of their
division - a place they'd been in since week two - the Magic needed
three goals. Just before half-time, Steve Davey got the first. Two
minutes into the second half, Steve Davey got the second. Late in the
third quarter, Steve Davey completed his hat-trick. |
|
 |
Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective 1 Red Rockers
1
Although a win would put them in the semis, it was a
strangely lacklustre half from the Red Rockers.
The Shortjaws were buoyed
with five loan players and looked good for the recruitments, with Joe
Brownlie giving them a first half lead. The second half was end-to-end
attacking football. Dutch Ricky equalised for the Rocks and they set
about securing the all important winner.... that just wouldn't come -
much to Rongotai's relief. |
|
 |
Bay Athletic
2 AndyCapped
5
In a dead rubber of a match, Bay Athletic needed a bunch
of loan signings for their meeting with AndyCapped. Josh Notman gave the
Caps the lead before golden boot nominee Dave Batty equalised. Duncan
Hodgson and Yorick Canales traded goals to keep things level with 10
minutes remaining. Three quick goals from Dave Batty, Craig Bland and
David Johnson ensured the Caps go into the semis in good spirits. |

Rongotai
v
Red Rockers
The 2010/11 Shield will go
to a new recipient and give whoever wins their first taste of Summer
League glory. It's the 5th time the Rocks and Rongotai have met. The
Rocks won the first two, but since then there has been a draw and a
convincing Rongotai win. The Rocks are in a little bit of a slump,
having gone winless in their last four matches. Rongotai lost last time
out but haven't lost two in a row since last season. Accordingly,
Rongotai are slight favourites for the match but it really could go
either way. |

Black Magic
v
South Coast Kinas
In the 5th place play-off, Black Magic and the Kinas will meet for the
4th time this season. The other three games ended 3-1, just once to
Magic. The Kinas have only won once in the last four. The Magic have won
their last two and would like to give Steve Davey a chance to chase the
golden boot. This could be the difference in what is usually a low key
game on Finals day. |
|
 |
Rongotai
v
Bay Athletic
The 3rd place play-off pairs up Rongotai and Bay Athletic for the 4th
time in history. Bay Athletic have won every previous meeting, never
failing to score less than 3 goals. Rongotai haven't won in three, Bay
Athletic in two. Third place is another game that is usually low key,
but there are three players still in contention for th Golden Boot - Van
Elia & Michael Androutsos for Rongotai, Kevin Provis for Bay Athletic. |
|
 |
Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective
v
Red Rockers
The Wooden Spoon playoff pits the Shield winning Rockers against the
expansion Shortjaws. In their previous two meetings, the Rocks won once and
the other was a draw. The Jaws haven't won in seven games. They drew last
week but have yet to manage two consecutive games without defeat.
Conversely, the Rocks - who lost heavily last week - have never lost two in
a row. The Rockers Casey Ferrier remains in contention for the Golden Boot
too. |
|
 |
AndyCapped v
Barca Bay
The Jessett Cup Final will be played between Barca and AndyCapped. Barca
are the reigning champs playing in their second Final. This is the Caps
third final - after losing the first two, will it be third time lucky?
It will be the 10th time the teams have met. The Caps are 6-3 up and won
the last two, but Barca won their one and only playoff meeting. |

The Caps and Rongotai fought out an
exciting match to decide the first Jessett Cup finalist. Casey Ferrier
gave Rongotai the lead after an even first quarter provoking a
response from the Caps front line. John O'Driscoll scored twice,
including a cross-come-shot that eluded everyone on its way to the top
corner. Michael Androutsos and Casey Ferrier levelled the score in the
second half. The Caps had the most possession, but Rongotai carved out
the chances and the Cap keeper Neil McInnes had to make several great
saves. AndyCapped progress after being perfect in the penalty shoot-out,
punishing Casey Ferrier and Jake Berquist. |

 |
South Coast Kinas
7 Red Rockers
1
The Kinas beat Red Rockers for the first time, inflicting
a good old fashioned whooping in the process as Kevin Duindan scored
five goals. The Rocks displayed some sloppy defending, looking hungover
from the previous night's Sevens festivities as they lost, somewhat
appropriately, 7-1. Casey Ferrier saved the Rocks from being completely
shut-out, while Alex Thornton and Michael Deane-Jackson made sure it
wasn't all about Kevin for the Kinas. |

Barca Bay
4 Bay Athletic
1
Barca Bay and Bay Athletic contested the second major
semi to decide who would meet the Caps. The first half was very tight
and either side could have taken a lead into the break. Fred Double
grabbed Barca the lead, finishing off a good move. Then four goals over
8 minutes of the final quarter decided the match. James Eadie scored two
for Barca. A Dave Rutherford header from a corner gave Athletic a
glimmer of hope, but one minute later Saschka Nicoresti-Goode finished a
breakaway attack to the put the game beyond doubt at 4-1. |

proved to be popular loan targets and as a result, 7 of the top 10 most

unprecedented two spots in the top 10 places of most

Michael Wray down to second place in the stats. |
 |
Mike Jessett became the first
Summer League player to reach (and surpass) 70

Nine players were ever presents for
their teams: Jack Williams, Xavier Scott (Barca Bay), Fred Double,
Richard Steel, Tim Robinson (South Coast Kinas), Jim Hardaker, Kristian
Miles, Steve Davey (Black Magic), Joe Brownlie (Shortjawed Kokopu
Collective). |
